Angels and Demons
'Angels and Demons' published in 2000 is Dan Brown's second book, but the first one from the series of mystery-thrillers about Robert Langdon.
Robert Langdon, a Harvard professor, is called to go to the CERN, an enormous phisics laboraotry near Geneva. As Robert reaches the CERN, it turns out that one of the phisicists, Leonardo Vetra was killed and his chest is branded with an ambigram of the word 'Illuminati'. Moreover, the Illuminati, a secret anti-christian organisation, have stolen antimatter- a substance that has as much energy as a small nuclear weapon. After further investigation, Robert realises that the Illuminati want to destroy Vatican City; he has only 24 hours to thwart it together with Vittoria Vetra, the adopted daughter of murdered phisicist.
I personally highly recommend you reading this book as it is really thrilling and well-written. The intrigue, fast action, and the tension created by Brown all make the book incredibly absorbing. The triller is at the same time soaked with amazing descriptions of Rome and its monuments and churches. In fact, after the publication of the book, the number of tourits visitng Rome dramatically increased- people wanted to see all of the places described by Brown.
We should also bear in mind that Brown, bulding up the layers of his novel, presented the history of both Church and the Illuminati in a highly controversial manner-of course not as controversial as 'The Da Vinci Code' but still, the writing aroused the wave of criticism. This is why I believe that everyone should read this litereary work in order to make their own opinions about the topic and Brown's approach to the issue. All in all, I really enjoyed the book and, to tell you the truth it is one of my favorite thrillers. If you like puzzles and riddles with surprising answers, you will certainly enjoy it.
