which can be appealing for children, but still! I did not feel to old for the play, and besides people older than me laughed and cried watching it.
It is just this kind of the story. One that gets you captivated, and you cannot wait to see the end, knowing and believing that it simply must be a happy one, but secretly dreading the worst. Also, the story that keeps you laughing even in the least appropriate moments.
"War Horse" is a play based on Michael Morpurgo's novel. It shows the really special relationship between a human and his horse, the sufferings of war, and the sacrifices we need to make for our loved ones. In addition, it depicts war in a thorough manner. Not trying to avoid war's absurdity, the play illustrates the struggle of the soldiers and artificial barriers among people. Changing sites, and giving an inside into both French and German trenches, we can see for ourselves that the differences between those soldiers are practically non-existents.
The whole play is magical, and staged with a visible precision. The puppets are most extraordinary. Their movements are not sharp and uncontrolled but most graceful and swift! They are beautiful, and the resemblance is striking. They seem to live and lead their own life on the stage. I do not mean just the horse, or even all the horses, but adorable additions in form of a very angry goose living on a farm, which pecks people with its beak. What is also quite interesting is the fact, that the puppeteers are not hidden backstage, but exposed. They add up magnificence to the whole performance.
The decorations are mostly kept simple. A few sticks, which divide the stage and piece of paper on which projections in form of drawn animations are shown. It is all very well though through, and the minimalism in decorations allows to properly expose the puppets and puppeteers.
The actors were also well chosen! I enjoyed their performance. The exceptionally funny part were the dialogues, which were in French or German. Not knowing French, I cannot assess their French properly, but my German allowed me to say that, the actors actually did a good job! Of course it sounded foreign and really funny (because they usually used the most stereotypical war German phrases), but it was a nice touch.
All in all, I was more than satisfied and I even shed a tear at the very ending. It is a really touching story and an amazing production and it is absolutely worth watching!

Even though some tried to convince me, it is actually a play for children, I went to see it. Because why not?
"War Horse" is definitely not childish, and it's not aimed at attracting children in any distinct way. Sure, it uses huge puppets, and perhaps that is the element,
